九州の最高峰でもある宮之浦岳を擁し、洋上アルプスとも称される屋久島。

スギの自然分布で南限とされるこの島に、屋久杉が分布しています。

しかし、そのすべてを屋久杉と呼ぶのではなく、樹齢１０００年を越えるもののみを屋久杉と呼び、それに満たないものはコスギとして区別して呼んでいます。

その屋久杉の代表が縄文杉であるのは皆さんご存じの通りです。

縄文杉といえば巨樹、巨樹といえば縄文杉とまで言われるくらい有名となった縄文杉だが、もちろん日本のスギの中では最大の幹周りを誇るスギの王者であると共に、日本を代表する巨樹の一本であると言っても過言ではないでしょう。

縄文杉は１９６６年屋久町役場の岩川貞次氏により紹介されました。

周辺に生育するスギの大きさから導き出された樹齢が約７２００年との結果が導き出され、縄文時代からの生き残りという理由から、縄文杉として呼ばれることとなるのです。

現在では７２００年説は否定する考えが一般的となったが、今から考えるとこの樹齢の判断が、縄文杉の運命を大きく左右することとなったのです。

この衝撃的な樹齢とネーミングにより、縄文杉の存在は年とともに人々に広く知られることとなり、一躍屋久島観光の中心的存在と化してしまったのです。

また１９９３年には世界遺産への登録もなされ、さらにこの木の名声に拍車をかけることとなってしまい、年間一万人以上の見学者が次々と訪れるようになっってしまいました。

人々に根元を踏まれ続け、樹勢の衰えが心配され、早急な対策が必要とされる事態へと向かっていったのは御存知の通りです。

当時の対策は、一握りの砂を縄文杉の根元まで運んでもらおうという”生命の砂、一握り運動”という活動を行っていたのであるが、現在でもこの活動は屋久島においては広く登山者に浸透しており、ある一定の成果を見ることが出来ます。

この運動は現在、屋久島のみならず各地にて実践されつつあり、見学者にも保護に積極的に参加してもらう考えに先鞭をつけた意味において、非常に価値のあるものだといえます。
